Labour Apprentice Scheme

labour-rose1Interested in politics? Want to find out more about how democracy works locally and nationally? Not sure where to go for mentoring and support?

The Labour Party in Oldham is launching a ground breaking scheme to encourage more young people in the town to become involved in local politics. The Labour Apprentice scheme will be open to all Oldham residents under 30 who share Labour’s values and would vote for them at elections. It  follows on the recent success of three young Oldham Labour councillors (Arooj Shah, Amanda Chadderton, and Sean Fielding) winning the prestigious Young Councillor of the Year award from the Local Government Information Unit on Monday February 25.

There will be a core group of 10-15 who over the 12 month programme will work with the Labour campaign organiser in Oldham on local campaigns. They will also study for the Labour Councillor Diploma and shadow senior councillors and MPs to gain a understanding of the roles and responsibilities of elected office. At the end of the process they will receive a certificate of achievement and be provided with a mentor to support their future political ambitions.

The General Secretary of the Labour Party, Iain McNicol, welcomed the initiative of the Oldham Labour Parties to launch a Labour Apprentice scheme. Iain McNicol said;

‘ All political parties need new talent and energy. This is a fantastic idea by Oldham Labour Party to provide a great training opportunity for young people who share our values to become more involved in local politics. I look forward to welcoming them when they come to London to visit Parliament and Labour Party Head Office’

Jim McMahon Leader of Oldham Council said ‘ As a Labour administration we have ambitious plans for the town. To achieve them we have to recruit the best and brightest in the town to our cause. I want this programme to identify future leaders of the town both as councillors and MPs’
